Queens Symphony Orchestra’s Summer Parks Series Salutes Our Troops

On Sunday, July 27, 2008 at 5 pm, the Queens Symphony Orchestra will kick off Summer on Broadway, the theme of this season’s Concerts on the Green - free summer parks series, under the musical direction of QSO Music Director/Conductor Constantine Kitsopoulos at the Forest Park Bandshell in Woodhaven.  This Broadway & Jazz concert will feature patriotic favorites paying tribute to our veterans and troops including the Armed Forces Salute and Cole Porter Salute. Broadway classics such as Chicago, West Side Story, and Candide and works by jazz legends, including Duke Ellington, will complete this memorable evening.

QSO is proud to bring its full, 45-piece orchestra to the residents of Queens, offering the opportunity to experience a high quality, professional concert in their own backyard. Enjoy this free night of Broadway & Jazz favorites and patriotic tributes that will leave you feeling like a true American.

This free community concert is sponsored in part by NYSCA, DCA, New York Senator Maltese, the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation and the Music Performance Fund.

In case of inclement weather, the concert will be moved inside to Christ the King High School on Metropolitan Ave. in Middle Village. For more information, please contact the Queens Symphony Orchestra office at (718) 326-4455, e-mail QSO at qso@queenssymphony.org, or visit our website at www.queenssymphony.org.

QUEENS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Now in our 56th season, Queens Symphony Orchestra (QSO) is the borough’s only professional orchestra and the oldest and largest professional arts organization in Queens.  QSO’s vision and mission statements reflect the organization’s priority of service to the culturally diverse members of the Queens community.  QSO has several programs that enhance the musical offerings to the borough of Queens, presenting 15 to 25 concerts throughout the year, serving 30,000 residents.  The Masterworks Concert Series presented in our artistic home, Queensborough Community College Performing Arts Center, provides access to outstanding, high-quality classical concerts for Queens residents at discounted and affordable prices.  With the financial support of elected officials and corporations, we are able to provide free tickets and transportation for seniors and high school students with our Masterworks Ticket Enrichment Program:  Seniors at the Symphony and Kids in the Hall.  The Concerts on the Green - free summer parks series, offers classical, pops, Broadway and opera selections in beautiful park settings throughout the borough bringing seniors, families and young adults together for a fun and informal event and helping strengthen community ties. The Music On the Move! Chamber Series showcases QSO musicians in various venues such as libraries, senior and community centers and town halls in hour-long performances of different ensembles, free of charge, helping to continue our decentralization efforts.  The Arts-In-Education program is QSO’s way of educating the youth of Queens, reaching over 12,000 children each year, and at no expense to the students.  Musicians/teaching artists provide in-class workshops, chamber ensembles give in-school presentation performances and the AIE program culminates in Young People’s Concerts.  With these concerts, students are transported to an outside performance hall to experience a live, professional symphonic concert with the emphasis placed on orchestral music in an educational format. With our new Side-by-Side Concerts, our Music Director and musicians work with junior high and high school students at their respective schools in master classes/sectionals, coachings, and rehearsals to prepare a concert event.
