Chiu-Yuan Chen – Clarinet
With her virtuosity and colorful sound, the Taiwanese clarinetist Ms. Chiu-Yuan Chen has been praised by the New York Times as “zesty, energetic, and capturing the music’s spirit”. She has mesmerized audiences through The United States, Europe,
and Asia, and
she performs internationally as a soloist, chamber artist, and orchestra
player. As a soloist, Ms. Chen will give her New York debut recital at Carnegie Weill Hall in
March, 2008, as a winner of the “Special Presentation Award” in the Artists International New York Debut Audition. She has won the first prize for
Solo Clarinet in the National Music Award in Taiwan in 2000, and as the winner of the special prize for
“Best performance of a contemporary Chinese work" in the 2001 Universal
Chinese Concerto Competition of the 21st Century, she performed the Clarinet
Concerto of a renowned Taiwanese
composer, Yu-Chou Chen,
on tour with the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra, introducing Taiwan’s
contemporary music. In 2006
summer, she was invited to play Weber’s first concerto by her Alma Mater, National Taiwan Normal University.
Equally versatile in orchestra, chamber
and solo repertoire, Ms. Chen has performed as principal clarinet of the
Juilliard Symphony, the Juilliard Orchestra, the New Juilliard Ensemble, and
has been participated in Focus! Festival, Juilliard Chamber
Festival, Pacific Music Festival, Idyllwild
Arts Summer Orchestra, National Taiwan Normal University Orchestra and Wind Ensemble. She is now a member of Asian Artists &
Concert orchestra in New York, and she has been invited to give a chamber music concert at Trinity
church in the coming April for its concert series. Ms. Chen received her bachelor
degree with high honors in music performance and education from National
Taiwan Normal University,
and Master of Music degree as a student of Charles Neidich
from The Juilliard School. She is now
continuing her studies with Mr. Neidich at The Graduate Center, City University of New York, as a candidate of Doctor of Musical
Arts.
